After Effects and H.264 MP4s for the Web

I discovered something a little disappointing today. Apparently the H.264 encoder in After Effects and Premiere doesn’t make progressive download friendly files. When you put these on the web the entire file has to be downloaded before it starts playing instead of playing as soon as it buffers enough. Adobe says they are working on a bug fix which hopefully will be included in the next version.

But for now, you can download an AIR app called QTIndexSwapper that will fix the file for you. One cool thing about AIR apps is they run on OS X and Windows, so that’s a plus for anyone who uses a Mac.

If you plan on using H.264 MP4s with my Flash HDMV viewer, this program is highly recommended.
