Blu-ray Tutorial 3 Part II: Multiple Pages Per IG

I’ve been receiving a few emails about questions on designing/authoring menus, and I am happy to answer them to the best of my ability. Pitney, if you are reading this I’m working on yours. One I got today asks:

If I have multiple pages in the (Scene Selection, Special Features) do I use the script to import them back into photoshop after making the appropriate PNGs?  Or do I manually nest the folders, prior to slicing?  I guess I am confused as to when I integrate the multiple pages, prior to export to Scenarist.

Sorry for the silly question.  Newbie here, and really appreciate your concise overview.

Here is my answer I gave. I hope this makes sense and clears up some confusion. I realize now I probably didn’t explain that very well in the tutorial and a lot of times I expect everyone to be fairly comfortable in Photoshop, which I know is rarely the case.

Your question isn’t silly at all, thinking back on it I probably didn’t explain multiple page menus very well. Maybe I’ll go back and record a quick explanation on how to do it. Here’s what I do.
Setp 1: Export all the PNGs into separate folders. For example, I’ll have a “mm” folder, “ss” folder, “setup” folder, and “sf” folder.
Step 2: Run the Import to Layers from Folder (or whatever it’s called script) for EACH folder.
Step 3: Slice EACH page
Step 4: Run the Slices from HTML File (or whatever that one is called) script for EACH page
Step 5: Save EACH page as it’s own PSD file in a new folder, normally named PSDs.
Step 6: So now I have 4 different PSD files. What I do now is in the mm PSD, select the “DS:” folder. Switch over to one of the other pages and click the down arrow to collapse all the layers in the “P:” folder. You then just drag and drop the “P:” layer onto the mm PSD. Anywhere will do it. You may have to hold the shift key while doing it to make sure everything snaps into place, though I can’t recall if it snaps without holding shift also. If you don’t have the “DS:” folder selected it will put it wherever you were last. Unless you were in a BOG or something, then you’ll most likely get an error as Photoshop has a limit of folders you can have nested.

That’s pretty much it, just repeat it for each PSD until you have one PSD with all your pages in it. You can also get creative with backgrounds and have a different background per Page, and a different background for the DS folder.

Once that’s all good to go, run the Designer plugin. If you get any errors, go through and make sure your hierarchy is looking right and everything is named correctly.

One last tip, I always put the pages in order that they are in the design. Mostly for the authors, but also for my HDMV Flash thing. To do that, start with which ever Page you want to be first and drag and drop it back into the DS folder. Repeat this until you have the order you want.
