Blu-ray Tutorial 8 Part II: Burning DVD-R for PS3 with Scenarist :: UPDATED

In tutorial 8 I explained how to burn a BD-R/BD-RE disc from Scenarist. Well what if you want to burn it to a DVD-R instead to save money on those BD discs? Well following the instructions from before won’t work in a PS3, though it worked fine in our S300 player.

So here’s what you do differently.

Step 1: Download a new index.bdmv and MovieObject.bdmv. They can be found on Doom9.org or on Rapid Share.

Step 2: Unrar the file you just downloaded using WinRAR or whatever tool you prefer.

Step 3: Replace the index.bdmv and MovieObject.bdmv in the BDMV folder you muxed from Scenarist with the files you just downloaded. Make sure to read Part I of this tutorial to make sure you mux everything correctly.

Step 4: Burn with ImgBurn using the same UDF 2.5 settings as before, but this time you don’t have to burn the Certificate folder.

That should be it. The disc will play in a PS3 and we also tried it in the Sony S300 player, both worked perfectly.

Updated June 25, 2008:
Apparently there is a problem with this technique. It will playback your first title, but then you lose all navigation commands. See this post for an explanation on how to fix it with some fancy hex editing:

    hi

i tested this it is working out fine only if the video alone is burned, if i burned with topmenu and popups it is directly playing only the video
    pls reply,

I’m not sure why you are having problems. We did this for a forced on IG and it worked without any trouble. Maybe the pop-ups don’t work on an AVCHD DVD. Or maybe it’s how you authored the menus is different from how we did it and it doesn’t like how you burned it.

    hi

thanks for your reply, my project didnt have any popups, it is a simple menu and movie track,

the first play movie object is assigned to topmenu which has the menu in the movie object,
how do i do the forced IG for menus.

    thanks

I just checked the one we did, we used non-multiplexing and always on for the menu, then created two clips, one IG clip and one movie clip for the background video. Then we created a playlist and dropped the background video in and the IG in. Then dropped the playlist into the TopMenu.

I think that’s it, I’m not sure why it would work for us and not for you.

    Good luck.

    hello

i tried this, after the muxing, if i replace index.bdmv and movieobject.bdmv (which was downloaded from the rapidshare link)and see the BDMV folder in total media player and in my PS3, only the navigations for the menu are working, the links to the movie is not working fine.

but without the replacement of the index and movieobject file it is playing fine in total media player.

    pls comment on this,
    thanks

The test we did was actually only a background and IG, so it may be that this doesn’t work for more complicated titles. This may be just a way to burn menu builds. I’ll look more into it when I get a minute.

    Hi all.

I’ve just experienced a similar issue. The title was authored in Scenarist, however when replacing the .bdmv files the Top Menu wasn’t working.

I will change the multiplexing options for the the menu and report back with my findings.

    Cheers all.

    hi all,
my top menu works fine on a ps3, but the movie objects do not play when the buttons have pressed.
    anyone any ideas/solutions???

Make sure you check out this link, it explains what the issue is. I’ve never tried it as we only burn menus onto DVD for approvals:
